Pure horror/comedy gold! I had read about Elijah Wood creating a production company. Apparently he loves horror and wants to have a platform for bringing out all sorts of horror projects. I believe "Cooties" is the first movie to come from this endeavor. This movie is everything I could ask for out of a horror/comedy! It's hilarious! Great ensemble cast with folks like Rainn Wilson (The Office) and many more! I laughed out loud and I had a great time!
Here is the IMDB synopsis: "A mysterious virus hits an isolated elementary school, transforming the kids into a feral swarm of mass savages. An unlikely hero must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives."
The Grade: A- (Super funny and great zombie-style action!)
The Good:
A lot of good to say about this one! First off, it sets the tone quickly that this is pure comedy. The cast is terrific, with all sorts of recognizable comedic actors. I felt like I was laughing from the opening scene straight to the end of the movie. Yet another strength of this movie is that it's not just about the laughs. It is also basically a zombie movie where the infected happen to be kids! I love this concept of kids vs the adults. It really works well in the movie. The kids are fast and ferocious. The adults are scared as hell as they are relentlessly chased throughout the movie. Good horror/comedy has a balance between the two. This movie is very self aware which also lends to it's strengths. It knows it's a sort of "goofy" comedy and it does not pretend to be anything else!
The Bad:
I'm going to say that for what this movie is supposed to be, I have no complaints at all. Sometimes you have to understand what a movie is trying to do and then you can ask yourself if they accomplished their goal. In this case, it's a perfect movie in terms of "goofy comedy/horror." I will say that there are some movies in this limited sub-genre that I liked a tad more....such as: "Tucker and Dale vs Evil," "Shaun of the Dead," and "Zombieland." These movies were perhaps a bit stronger in certain ways.
The Ugly:
The movie is really just pure fun, but if you have an issue with seeing violence toward children then you might find an issue with this movie. There is a fair amount of gore, but not excessive. Perhaps ugliest of all.....an infected chicken nugget. I just don't know if I can ever look at a chicken nugget the same again!
In Conclusion:
Loved this movie! It's such a fun and hilarious ride! I would watch this movie several times and enjoy! If you like goofy comedy and horror then don't hesitate! If you prefer your comedy to be more...refined then you might not enjoy this one as much as I did. Sometimes I'm the only one laughing in a room, and it's sad! Watch this with some friends and enjoy!
